Should You Add Florals to Your Oahu Family Photos?
When families start planning their Oahu photo session, they usually focus on the big things first: the beach location, what everyone will wear, and whether to do sunrise or sunset.
But one small detail that can make a surprisingly big difference in photos is florals.
You definitely don’t need flowers for a great session. The scenery here already does a lot of the work for us. But adding something simple like a flower crown or a lei can bring in color, texture, and a little extra island feel that photographs beautifully.
There’s also a very practical reason many people love them: they can help keep hair under control when the wind picks up.
If you’ve been wondering whether florals are worth it, here are a few things to think about so you can decide whether it’s something you’d enjoy adding to your session.
Florals in Oahu Family Photos
I’ve photographed a lot of families visiting Oahu over the years, and when people do bring florals, it’s usually something really simple, like a flower crown, a ti-leaf lei, or even just a single bloom tucked behind someone’s ear.
Nothing elaborate. Just a small detail that adds color and a little tropical feel to the photos.
And sometimes those small details make a bigger difference than people expect.
They Help With Windy Beach Hair
If you’ve spent any time near the ocean, you probably already know this: there’s usually a breeze.
Most of the time it’s actually great for photos because it adds movement and keeps everyone from overheating, but it can also make hair a little harder to manage.
This is one reason lei po‘o (flower crowns) are so popular. They give hair a little structure so it doesn’t fly everywhere when the wind picks up. Instead of constantly brushing hair out of faces, the crown helps hold things in place.
It’s a small thing, but it can make a noticeable difference during the session.
They Instantly Add a Tropical Feel
Another reason florals photograph so well here is that they immediately signal that you’re somewhere tropical.
Even in closer photos where you might not see the full beach or ocean, a flower crown or lei still brings that island detail into the image. Those little touches help make it clear you’re not just anywhere—you’re in Hawaii.
It’s an easy way to add a little extra personality and sense of place to the photos.
Should You Bring a Flower Crown to Your Hawaii Photo Session?
This is probably the most common floral question I get.
The answer is simple: if you like them, they photograph beautifully.
Flower crowns (called lei po‘o) are one of the easiest ways to add florals to a session. They add color, they help keep hair in place, and kids especially tend to love wearing them.
And honestly, if there’s ever a place where wearing a flower crown feels completely natural, it’s Hawaii.
But they’re completely optional. Plenty of families skip florals entirely and their photos are still gorgeous.
Florals Aren’t Just for the Ladies
A lot of people think florals are mostly for moms or daughters, but there are great options for the guys too.
One of my favorites is a ti-leaf lei.
Instead of flowers, these leis are made from braided green ti leaves. They have a really clean, strong look and photograph beautifully against neutral clothing and beach scenery. They’re a great option for dads or boys who want to participate without feeling overly floral.
They’re also especially nice if you’re celebrating something like an anniversary during your trip, since they add a little color and a bit of celebratory flair without feeling over the top.
How Ordering Florals Works
If you decide you'd like florals for your session, I’m happy to coordinate that for you.
I work with a local florist and can handle the ordering and pickup, which means you don’t have to worry about tracking anything down while you're on vacation. I’ll bring the florals with me to the session so everything is ready to go.
All I really need from you is a general idea of what you'd like.
Some families simply tell me a general color palette, and I’ll work with the florist to create something that fits the look of the session. Other clients prefer to be a little more involved and send inspiration photos or screenshots, which works great too.
It can be as simple or as specific as you'd like.
A Few Quick Tips if You're Considering Florals
Keep it simple.
Florals work best when they’re a small accent rather than the main focus.Coordinate with your outfits.
You don’t need to match perfectly, but it helps if the flower colors complement what everyone is wearing. If you're still figuring out outfits for your session, you can also check out my guide on what to wear for your Oahu photo session here.
Don’t stress about it.
Florals are completely optional. Your photos will still be beautiful without them.
The Bottom Line
Florals definitely aren’t required for great family photos in Oahu. The beaches and scenery already do a pretty amazing job on their own.
But if you want to add a little extra color, help keep hair in place on windy days, and bring a bit more of that tropical feel into your photos, something simple like a flower crown or ti-leaf lei can be a really nice touch.
