Should I Book a Mini Session?

Occasionally, I’ll get an inquiry where the potential client is looking specifically for mini sessions.

First, to be upfront… I do not offer individual mini sessions. Because I am only available to photograph a certain number of days per week, I am not able to commit to a single mini session and therefore turn down a potential full session date for that time slot. Instead, I have recently begun to offer set mini session dates in the Spring and Fall, where multiple families can sign up to participate.

But before jumping to sign up for a mini, everyone should make sure their expectations are aligned with what a mini can and can’t do. Check out the questions below to see if a mini session is right for you!

What is a Mini Session?

Mini sessions are short photo shoots—usually around 20 to 30 minutes. They are ideal for getting some quick, professional photos without a long-term commitment. You'll still get beautiful, high-quality images, but in a much more time-efficient way.

I can tell you from personal experience that mini sessions are a lifesaver. When I needed some updated family photos but couldn’t dedicate an entire afternoon to it, a mini session saved the day. It was simple, quick, and gave me exactly what I needed—beautiful images without the stress.

Mini Sessions are Great For:

1. Small Families (2-4 People)

For families with just a few members, mini sessions are a great way to capture all the must-have shots without feeling rushed. You’ll be able to get group photos, a couple of individual portraits, and still leave with enough time for everyone to smile and enjoy the experience.

2. Families with Older Kids

Older kids usually don’t need much warm-up time, so we can jump straight into the photos and still get a nice variety without feeling rushed. If you’ve got teens or kids who can follow directions, mini sessions are a perfect fit.

3. Families with Kids Who Listen Well

If your kids are good at following directions and can handle quick transitions, a mini session is ideal! Think: “Stand here, smile, done!” You can still get beautiful shots in a short amount of time when things go smoothly.

4. When You Only Want a Few Mostly Posed Images

Maybe you just need a few family portraits for your holiday cards or an updated wall photo. If you’re not looking for a full gallery of candid moments, mini sessions offer a perfect way to get the posed shots you need without the extra fuss.

5. Couples or Maternity Sessions

Mini sessions are perfect for smaller, simpler sessions like a quick couple’s portrait or maternity photos. If you’re just looking for a handful of favorite images, a mini is all you need.

6. Returning Clients

If we’ve worked together before, your family knows the flow of a mini session, so there’s no need for much warm-up time. We can get straight into it and make the most of our time together.

Mini Sessions are Not Great For:

1. Large or Extended Families

Once we start juggling big groups—think grandparents, cousins, and more—the 20 minutes can fly by too quickly. For large families, a full session will give us more time to move at a relaxed pace and get everyone involved without feeling rushed.

2. Families with Shy Kids

If your child needs some time to warm up to the camera, a mini session may not give them the space they need. With a full session, we can take things slow and capture more natural moments as they feel comfortable.

3. Toddlers or Very Young Children

Toddlers have their own agenda, right? Mini sessions move at a fast pace, which can be tough when you’re trying to get natural, playful moments with your little one. If you want those sweet giggles and candid moments, a longer session gives us more time to get them.

4. Families Who Love Candid, Playful Shots

The best candid moments happen when everyone relaxes and forgets about the camera. That takes time, which minis don’t always allow. If you’re after those true-to-life moments of your family being themselves, a full session gives us the space to do that.

5. Newborn Sessions

Newborns need breaks for feeding, snuggling, and soothing—things that don’t fit into a quick, rushed timeline. For newborns, a full session is always the best option because we can take our time and make sure your baby is comfortable.

The Bottom Line:

Mini sessions are perfect if you’re looking for something short, simple, and sweet. They’re great for small families, quick updates, or just a handful of beautiful, mostly posed images. But, if you have a large group, kids who need time to warm up, or if you’re hoping for lots of candid shots, a full session will give you a much better experience.

Either way, you’ll walk away with beautiful photos that you can cherish for years to come. That’s always my goal, no matter the session type!
